2026 was the inaugural year of the BC Soccer Futsal Provincial Championships, which was years in the making thanks to the foundation laid by Charlie Cuzzetto who was instrumental in the growth and governance of futsal across British Columbia. To pay our respect, and recognize Charlie for his lifetime of leadership, advocacy and service to Futsal and Soccer, the BC Soccer Men's Futsal Provincial Cup will now be known as the Charlie Cuzzetto Men's Futsal Provincial Cup, effective immediately.
Naming this competition in Charlie’s honour serves to preserve his legacy for future generations of athletes, coaches, officials, and administrators; and publicly acknowledge his central role in establishing BC as Canada’s futsal hub for several decades.
Charlie's impact on soccer and futsal spans more than five decades and includes the following highlights: Founding member of Futsal Canada and a key architect in establishing BC as the National Futsal Centre from the 1980s through the early 2000s. Instrumental in the transition from FIFUSA to FIFA-aligned futsal, ensuring alignment with global governance. Served as President of Futsal Canada (1991–2003), securing formal CSA affiliation and national integration. Coached and managed Canadian teams at four Futsal World Championships (Spain 1985, Australia 1988, Italy 1991, Argentina 1996). Represented Canada in numerous international competitions and served as Head of Delegation, team manager, coach, and Match Commissioner across FIFA and CONCACAF events. Led the organization and hosting of the inaugural Aboriginal Indoor Soccer (Futsal) Cup (Canada–Australia, 1987–88) and the first National Youth Futsal Championships in BC in 2012. Served as the first futsal representative on Canada Soccer’s Competition Committee.
Off the court, Charlie was a BC Soccer Board Member (2004–2012) and President (2009–2012), Canada Soccer Board Member (2009–2024), Elected member of FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee (2017–2021), and is a current member of FIFA’s Football Tribunal and Deputy Chair of the Concacaf Appeals Committee. Charlie is Futsal Canada Hall of Fame's second-ever inductee (2017), a BC Soccer Life Member (2016), recipient of the Canada Soccer President’s Award (2024), the Vanni Lenarduzzi Award of Excellence (2025), and member of the Ottawa Futsal Club Wall of Fame (2023).
Charlie Cuzzetto’s name is synonymous with futsal in British Columbia and Canada. Naming the Men’s Futsal Provincial Cup in his honour is a fitting, permanent, and highly visible tribute to a leader whose vision and dedication shaped the sport at every level. This proposal allows BC Soccer to recognize Charlie’s immeasurable contributions while he is still able to receive this honour, ensuring the tribute is both meaningful and personal.
